About

A small shop for well-made things

The Steel Box is a small store built from shipping containers on a coffee estate in Ammathi, Coorg. We find good things, many of them from independent makers and small brands, and give them a shelf. Helping creative people and small businesses thrive is still why we exist.

It started with containers

We built The Steel Box ourselves, out of second-hand shipping containers set on concrete pillars on our family's coffee estate. We had no construction background, so we wrote down every step and every rupee as we went. Those notes became The Build, and they still help people planning their own container projects.

Then came the makers

The containers opened as a pop-up for local artisans: paintings, jams and pickles, clothing, handcrafted bags, earrings, lampshades. For two years, makers from around Coorg sold their work from our shelves.

It showed us how much good work there is around us, and how hard it is for small makers to be seen. Plenty of people make wonderful things; far fewer have a shop to sell them from. That shaped everything that came after.

Today

The Steel Box is now a curated store. We buy in what we sell: gifts, souvenirs and everyday goods, chosen one by one, so we can stand behind everything on our shelves. We still look for makers first. If a small team or a single person is making something beautiful, we'd rather stock theirs than a factory's.

There's a quiet deck upstairs where you can sit and work among the coffee trees, and we're bringing the shelves online too, so the people behind what we stock can reach customers far beyond Ammathi.

Running the store taught us one more thing: small businesses need simple tools. We built our own billing and stock system because nothing else fitted. Now we're sharing it, along with AI tools, courses and talks, through Tools & learning. It's the same mission, just with software.

Homemade

We look for small batches and people we can name before anything mass-produced.

Curated

Every piece is chosen by hand. If we wouldn’t give it as a gift, we don’t stock it.

Built ourselves

From the containers to the software, we build what we need — and share how we did it.
